Materials

      Pot.
      Stove.
      Filter.
      Glass.
      Knife.
      Kitchen board.

Compounds

      Red cabbage.
      Distilled water.
      Water.
      Sodium hydroxide.
      Vinegar.

Procedure

     1. Cut in pieces two leaves of red cabbage. (you should cut the leaves on a kitchen board)

     2. Boil 1 liter of water.

     3. When the water reaches ebullition, remove the pot of the stove and add the pieces of cabbage to it. (you should be careful with the hot pot and water. They can cause severe burns)

     4. Let the water cool by itself. Then filter the resulting liquid. The liquid should have a violet - red - dark color. (the most important now is to know which colors the indicator acquires when in contact with alkaline, acid or neutrals solutions. For neutral solutions, the indicator will maintain its original color, for acid solutions the indicator will become red. In relation to the alkaline, the indicator can acquire two different colors, being blue for weak and green for strong alkaline solutions)

For testing the acidity of solutions you should pour some indicator in a cup. Then add the solution that you want to study. You can use vinegar (acetic acid) as acid, tap water as weak base and caustic soda (hydroxide of sodium) as strong base. The distilled water can be used as neutral.
